What is Surface Treatment?

In an effort to ensure certain characteristics and properties, to prevent corrision, simply improve appearance or extend its service life, an additional surface treatment process will be operated on machined parts, which is known as surface treatment.

Our Major Surface Treatments in CNC Machining

  • Anodizing

It is an electrolytic oxidation process that transforms the surface of the material into a protective film, making it difficult to oxidize and corrode, and can extend the life and achieve the appearance of various colors. Commonly used anodize treatments are divided into: normal anodic anodize, hard anodize, thick film anodize, micro-arc anodize and so on. The materials that can be anodized are: aluminum, magnesium, titanium, etc.

  • Plating

The basic process of electroplating is to immerse the parts in a metal salt solution as cathode, and the metal plate as anode. Pass the current to deposit the required plating layers on the parts. The suitable electroplating effect will make your products more fashionable. Common electroplating is: copper plating, nickel plating, silver plating, gold plating, chrome plating, zinc plating, tin plating, vacuum plating, etc.

  • Electrophoresis

With the continuous improvement of industrial demand, electrophoresis treatment can be customized in various colors to maintain the metallic luster while enhancing the corrosion resistance, which has a small impact on the accuracy of the product. The thickness of one side is about 10-25um.

  • Passivation

Passivation, also known as chromate treatment, is a pickling process that can remove grease, rust and oxides on the surface through immersion or ultrasonic cleaning. Through the chemical reaction of the passivation solution, the effect of preventing corrosion and prolonging rust can be achieved. The color of the passivation film will change with different materials. Passivation will not increase the thickness of the product, and there is no need to worry about it affecting the accuracy of the product.

  • Blackening

Blackening is also called bluing. The principle is that the product is immersed in a strong oxidizing chemical solution to produce an oxide film on the metal surface to isolate the air and achieve the purpose of rust prevention. This process is applicable to steel materials.

  • QPQ

QPQ is the abbreviation of Quench-Polish-Quench, which means that ferrous metal parts are placed in two salt baths with different properties to achieve the purpose of surface modification on parts. It has good wears resistance, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance and small deformation. This process is applicable to steel materials.

(Note: stainless steel products cannot be blackened, only QPQ can be used to achieve the effect of blackening the surface)

  • Laser Engraving

Laser etching is also called laser engraving or laser marking. It is a surface treatment process that uses optical principles to form LOGO or patterns on the product. The laser engraved effect is permanent, and the surface quality is high. It is suitable for all kinds of hardware and plastic products.

  • Silk Screen Printing

The color of the ink can be customized according to the customer's needs. If you want the silk screen printing effect to be more durable, you can also add a layer of UV to extend its life. It is suitable for various hardware and plastic parts, and can also be combined with surface treatments such as anodizing, painting, powder coating.

  • Powder Coating/Painting

Painting and powder coating are two common surface treatments, and they are the most commonly used for precision parts and small batch customization. They can protect the surface from corrosion and rust, and can also achieve beautiful effects. Both powder coating and painting can be customized with different textures, different colors, and different gloss (matte, flat, high-gloss) effects.

  • Sandblasting

Sandblasting is one of the commonly used surface treatments for hardware products. It can improve cleanliness and roughness, and increase the adhesion and durability between the product and coating. Therefore, many surface treatments choose sandblasting as their pretreatment such as: sand blasting + anodizing, sand blasting + electroplating, sand blasting + electrophoresis, sand blasting + powder blasting, sand blasting + baking paint, sand blasting + passivation, etc.

  • Teflon Coating

It is a very individual surface treatment. It has excellent anti-sticking, non-sticky, high temperature resistance, low friction, high hardness, non-humidity, high chemical resistance and other characteristics, so it is widely used in the food industry, tableware, kitchen utensils, paper industry, medical equipment, electronic products and automotive products, chemical equipment, etc.

In addition to the above surface treatment, we can also do dyeing, CD pattern, etching, high gloss, polishing, etc., contact us now for more details about your customized surface finishes!

Q&A about Surface Treatment

  • What is the difference between powder coating and spray painting?

a.Compared to conventional spray painting, powder coating produces less hazardous waste, which means it is environmentally friendly and pollution-free.

b.Unlike a conventional liquid coating, the utilization rate of powder in powder coating is up to 95%.

c.There are a wide range of paint to choose with spray painting, whereas there are relatively few options for powder spraying.

d.Powder coating achieves a thicker but less smooth finish compared to spray painting.

  • What is the difference between laser marking and silk screen printing?

a.Laser marking uses laser beam to form a certain pattern on the product, but silk screen printing uses ink to mark the surface of the product.

b.Screen printing is less durable than laser marking.

c.Silk screening uses ink to mark materials, which means it is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

d.Unlike laser marking, silk screen printing equipment is inexpensive and easy to operate, however, it is less precise than laser marking.

  • Can stainless steel be blackened?

Technically, the stainless steel can not be blackened, but we can use the QPQ(quench--polish-quench)process to reach the effect of surface blackened.
